Dear Friends,
As many of you know, a burst
heating pipe on the Wednesday of Holy Week has led to a long and expensive
operation. Not only was the leaking pipe under the car-park, but it was
also covered in asbestos. The result has been a very expensive
repair with the asbestos removal alone costing around £15,000. In addition,
there will be the cost of the pipe renewal and the associated works in the
car-park and men’s toilet and choir changing room area. Such expenditure
cannot be budgeted for – it is unexpected, necessary – and a great drain on
the Abbey’s resources. I propose to hold a ‘gift morning’ on Saturday 28
June when I will be available in the Abbey to receive donations towards the
cost of this work: I will be there from 10 am to 12 noon and I do hope that
many of you will be able to come along and make a contribution. If you
cannot come that morning, then please consider putting a donation in an
envelope marked ‘heating pipe’ and handing it in either on the following
Sunday or any other time.
There is so much we want to
do to advance the worship and mission of the Abbey; the restoration of the
organ, the establishment of a chorister endowment fund, the development of
the Place of Paisley and the west side of the cloister. These are among the
ways in which we are taking our glorious inheritance and building on it in
order to be the church in our generation and, hopefully, to provide a sure
and firm foundation for the Abbey’s worship, witness and mission in the
years ahead. We can well do without the unexpected expenditure we have
incurred because of a burst pipe – would it not be wonderful if that burden
could be lifted from us by the generous giving of us all so that we can once
again focus on the real work of the Abbey?
Do please support the gift
morning on Saturday 28 June.
